macOS Sierra Coming This Fall

At Apple's latest annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) there were surprisingly no new hardware announcements made. What they did reveal was the future of their new operating system, coined as macOS Sierra.

For

For the last decade and a half, Apple has referred to their operating system as Mac OS X (The X is pronounced 10, not the letter X). Starting with this new version and releasing to the general public this fall, the name is now macOS.

New macOS Features

The good news: Apple has crammed a lot of really cool new features into macOS Sierra 10.12.

  • Siri on macOS
  • Upgraded Photo’s app
  • Apple Watch can unlock your Mac
  • Shared clipboard from your iPhone/iPad to your Mac and back again
  • iCloud Drive updates

What Macs Are Compatible With macOS?

All these changes come with a price, and that price is compatibility. If you are running an older Mac, there is a chance you will not be able to upgrade to the new OS this fall. Supported Mac computers include:

  • MacBook Pro (2010 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2010 and later)
  • Mac Mini (2010 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2010 and later)
  • MacBook (Late 2009 and later)
  • iMac (Late 2009 and later)

If your Mac is not on that list, you won’t be able to run macOS Sierra 10.12. While a 2009 MacBook Pro is a great computer, Mac OS X 10.11 (Mavericks) is the latest OS you will be able to run on that machine.

How to Find What Model You Own

Unclear on what year your Mac was released by Apple? By clicking on About This Mac, you can find your OS version and year your Mac was released. If it’s on the list above, you’re all set. If it’s older, it will not run macOS Sierra.

If a new Mac is just out of your budget, fear not! Ramjet has you covered! We have plenty of upgraded Macs at great prices that will allow you to run macOS Sierra. Our inventory changes often as we get new stock in, so be sure to click here to see what we have! And remember, an upgraded Mac with maxed out RAM and an SSD is a very powerful computer, and macOS Sierra will work great on it!

Memory for Mac Mini & More

The Mac mini is often used as a second Mac in the home, particularly for those that have a particular application in mind for this machine. We hear of users buying a Mac mini for a home theatre system since its HDMI port makes it easy to connect to your TV. The Mac mini server version is particularly useful for hosting services in your home.

2012 Mac mini

Apple has designed the 2012 Mac mini to be user-upgradable. You can install a pair of dimms in the Mac mini, either in 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB of RAM. We do not recommend that users attempt to upgrade their hard drive unless they are accustomed to tinkering. You can order a Mac mini with 500GB HDD, 1TB HDD, or you can go the route of an SSD or Fusion Drive. We don't see the point in that since the Mac mini is generally used for a more cost conscious approach.

2012 Mac mini ports

Apple made slight modifications to the ports on a 2012 Mac mini. The USB 2.0 port is now a USB 3.0 port. There is one Thunderbolt port, HDMI out, Ethernet, SDXC, and Audio In and Out. Ramjet offers some external storage options such as the 3TB Thunderbolt Drive, for example.

Activity Monitor on Your Mac Mini

If you're considering a Mac Mini RAM upgrade, here's a sure way to find out if your current system would benefit from more Apple RAM. Go to your Applications folder in your Finder and look for the Utilities folder. Inside this folder, you will find a handy application called the Activity Monitor. Double click on this application, find the System Memory option at the bottom half of the screen.

You will find terms used for Free, Wired, Active, Inactive, and Used. The pie chart provided to the right will indicate how much is allocated to each of these terms. The important one to note is Free memory. If you discover that your pie chart has less than 25% allocated to free memory, it is likely that you are due for a Apple RAM upgrade.

Pay Attention to Page Outs:

Page outs happen when your system has to write information from RAM onto your hard drive because your RAM is full. This is a sure indication that by adding more Apple memory from Ramjet, you should see a substantial increase in your system's speed and overall performance. These are some memory upgrade options for your Mac Mini machine.

Mac mini (2018) does not have user-installable RAM. You can configure the memory in your Mac mini (2018) when you purchase it. To upgrade the memory in your Mac mini (2018), go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider.

2014

Mac mini (Late 2014) has memory that is integrated into the main logic board and can't be upgraded.

2012, 2011, 2010

To remove and install memory in your Mac mini (Late 2012), Mac mini (Mid 2011) or Mac mini (Mid 2010), use the following steps.

Remove the bottom cover

  1. Turn off your Mac mini. From the Apple menu (), choose Shut Down.
  2. Disconnect the power cord and all other cables from your Mac mini.
  3. Lay your Mac mini upside down on a soft cloth or towel and then rotate the bottom cover anticlockwise to the unlocked position.
  4. Press on the cover to pop up the opposite side, and then remove the cover.

Remove the original memory modules

  1. Gently spread the clips at the ends of the top memory module just enough to let the free edge pop up.
  2. Pull the module out of the slot.
  3. Repeat to remove the second, bottom module.

Install the new memory

  1. Carefully press the notched edge of the new memory module into the bottom slot while keeping the opposite edge slightly raised.
  2. Press down on the raised edge until the clips snap into place.
  3. Repeat to install the top memory module.

Replace the bottom cover

Don't connect the power cable or turn on your Mac mini until you replace the bottom cover. Never operate your Mac mini without the cover in place.

  1. Replace the bottom cover using the alignment dots to place it in the unlocked position.
  2. Rotate the cover clockwise to lock it in place.
  3. Reconnect the power cable and any other cables you disconnected.

After you install the memory, confirm that your Mac mini sees the new memory.

2009 and earlier

To remove or install memory in the following Mac mini models, go to an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

Confirm that your Mac sees the new memory

To check that the computer recognises the new memory:

  1. Start up your computer.
  2. When you see your desktop, choose Apple () menu, then choose About This Mac.
  3. Confirm that the memory listed matches the memory you installed.

If the reported memory size isn't correct or if your Mac mini repeatedly plays three tones, it may be having trouble recognising a memory module. If this happens, shut down your Mac mini, verify the module specifications against the requirements for your Mac mini model, and then repeat the memory installation instructions to make sure that the modules are installed correctly. If you still have issues, remove the memory and consult the support information that came with the memory or contact the supplier who provided the memory.
